NHS NSS Case Study

The Client

NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) are national health board within NHS Scotland, providing essential support services and expertise to help deliver effective and efficient healthcare across Scotland. NHS NSS employs around 3,400 staff over nine different sectors geographically spread across Scotland

We have worked with NHS NSS for more than 20 years in different capacities. They are a regular client and we have designed and delivered a huge variety of development programmes, sessions and events for them over the years, ranging from executive coaching, webinars and full leadership development programmes.

The Challenge

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for online learning changed rapidly. NHS NSS staff were all working remotely and in need of learning solutions to deal with the rapid change that the organisation was going through, and engaging sessions which would bring people together.

Many leaders were now having to deal with managing their staff through unprecedented change and at rapid pace. COVID was a difficult environment to work in – people were feeling isolated and disconnected, morale was low, staff were coming to grips with a new way of working all while living in an unfamiliar environment of lockdown and isolation and the rules and regulations were always changing.

NHS NSS needed a solution that brought people back together, created a sense of connection and shared understanding, while also learning how to manage their work, their staff and themselves through this change.

The Solution

Following discussions with NSS’s Learning and Development department and individual leaders on what was needed we designed and delivered a series regular webinars, focusing on Change Management and Building Morale – paying specific attention to the changing work environment and the impact that the pandemic was having on.

We were very conscious that online events are not simply a copy of in-person events, so we put a huge amount of effort into making the sessions dynamic and participative as well as informative to keep participants engaged throughout.

We did a lot of ‘lessons learned’ and tweaked our sessions along the way – with lots of feedback from participants, the L&D team and from our own facilitators. As a result, we were able to use the technology to our advantage and create connection, participation and engagement through the use of breakout rooms, pauses for reflection and discussion and our unique delivery style which incorporates coaching principles and our core value – authenticity

The Impact

The webinars were extremely beneficial to the participants – it gave them a safe and supportive environment to share their experience, understand how others were feeling, learn from each other and feel connected in a time where everyone was isolated.

The participants were able to consider change management techniques, understand what mattered most to people during times of change and how people respond differently to change as well as how to manage these different responses. They were able to apply morale building strategies to support their staff through difficult times and had an opportunity to feel supported themselves, through feedback from us as facilitators and other participants in the webinars.

The webinars were always very well attended and the feedback we got was overwhelmingly positive.

Additional plans or forthcoming projects:

Following on from these very popular webinars, the client has expanded the topics to cover more than Change Management and Building Morale. Since 2020, we have delivered regular webinars every quarter on topics like Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, Managing Burnout, Compassionate Leadership, Balancing Compassion and Accountability, Productivity, Leadership and Assertiveness. These sessions are very popular, well attended and people often return to attend other topics.
